Pockets and the Magic Rhythm of Kindness
Pockets was a little boy with a big heart and a curious mind. Every day, he loved learning something new from the wonderful people around him. His friend Greg had already started teaching him something very important — the magic words “Thank you.”
Greg explained to Pockets that saying “Thank you” was more than just two words. It showed kindness, respect, and appreciation for the people who cared about you.
One day, Greg introduced Pockets to another special friend named Harry. Harry was Greg’s business partner at the clothing store. Harry was a kind man who loved sharing his talents with others. He lived with his wife Lisa, and they had three wonderful children.
Unlike Greg, who did not have children yet, Harry loved having a busy home filled with laughter, music, and family.
“Pockets, would you like to see something special?” Harry asked with a smile.
“Yes!” Pockets replied excitedly.
Harry took Pockets around his house, showing him all the wonderful things that made his home special. Then they walked down the stairs into the basement.
When the lights turned on, Pockets’ eyes grew wide.
There, in the corner of the room, was a beautiful drum set.
“Wow! What is that?” Pockets asked.
“This is my drum set,” Harry said proudly. “When I was younger, I was a professional drummer. I even played music with a famous group called Sam and Dave.”
Pockets had never heard of Sam and Dave, but then Harry played some of their famous songs.
As the music filled the room, Pockets smiled.
“I may not know their names,” said Pockets, “but I know this song!”
Harry laughed. “That’s because great music can touch your heart even if you don’t know where it came from.”
The songs “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Coming” filled the basement as Harry tapped along with the rhythm. Then he looked at Pockets and said, “Music is not just about hearing sounds. It is about feeling the beat.”
Harry sat beside Pockets and began teaching him.
“Listen carefully,” Harry said. “Every song has a pattern. Let’s count together.”
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.”
Pockets repeated after him.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.”
“Good!” Harry smiled. “Now listen for where the music begins and where it ends. The rhythm keeps moving, and we can follow the pattern again and again.”
They practiced together.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.”
Over and over, Pockets listened carefully. At first, he only heard the drums. But slowly, he started hearing something more — the spaces between the beats, the little pauses, and the moments when the music changed.
“You hear it!” Harry said proudly. “You are learning to feel the rhythm.”
After some time, Harry left Pockets alone to practice.
Pockets sat quietly with the drums and thought about everything Harry had taught him. He realized that rhythm was not only in music. Rhythm was everywhere.
It was in the sound of footsteps.
It was in the waves of the ocean.
It was even in the words people spoke.
Soon, Pockets began using the same 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 rhythm when he wrote poems. The beats helped him make his words flow smoothly. Whenever he created songs and lyrics, he remembered Harry’s lesson.
Years passed, and Pockets became a talented songwriter. People loved his songs because they had heart, kindness, and a special rhythm that made everyone want to sing along.
Whenever someone asked Pockets how he learned to write such beautiful music, he always remembered Harry.
“Harry gave me a gift,” Pockets would say. “He shared his talent and took the time to teach me. His kindness helped me discover my own talent.”
Pockets never forgot the most important lesson he learned from Greg and Harry:
A gift does not have to be something you can hold in your hands. Sometimes the greatest gifts are the knowledge, love, and kindness that someone shares with you.
And whenever Pockets finished writing a new song, he always smiled and said:
“Thank you, Harry. Thank you for teaching me the rhythm of music and the rhythm of kindness.”
