Pockets and Bubbles

One sunny morning, Pockets skipped down to the edge of Willow Pond. The water sparkled like a thousand tiny mirrors, and the lily pads bobbed gently in the breeze.

“Hello, pond!” Pockets called out.

Something wiggled beneath the surface. A little orange fish with shiny scales and big round eyes swam up close. Out of his mouth floated a tiny, shimmering bubble. It drifted up, up, up… and when it reached the top of the water, it popped softly.

“Hello!” said a small, cheerful voice.

Pockets gasped. “Did that bubble just talk?”

Another bubble rose and burst open with a friendly little voice. “My name is Bubbles!”

“Wow!” Pockets laughed. “I’m Pockets! Your words live inside bubbles?”

“They do,” said Bubbles, his voice rising gently from the water. “When I talk, my words float up, and when they reach the top, you can hear them.”

Pockets watched closely. Not every bubble reached the top. Some little bubbles floated slowly around Bubbles, glowing softly. Bubbles opened his mouth and gobbled one up.

“Hey! You just ate a word!” said Pockets.

“Of course,” Bubbles giggled. “Words stay in the water, and I eat them. They’re my food!”

Pockets sat down on a warm, flat rock. “What do words taste like?”

Bubbles thought for a moment. “Kind words taste sweet, like honey. They make my fins strong and my scales shine.”

“And the other kind?”

Bubbles’ eyes grew a little sad. “Mean words taste bitter and sour. They give me a tummy ache.”

Just then, two children, Mia and Leo, came running down to the wooden dock with a kite. The string had gotten tangled, and they were arguing loudly.

“You’re so clumsy! You ruined it!” said Mia.

“Well, you’re bossy, and nobody wants to play with you!” Leo shouted back.

As they shouted, their words splashed into the pond. But these words didn’t sparkle. They were dark and gray, like little storm clouds sinking into the water.

Bubbles swam around them, trying not to eat them, but there were so many! One gray word floated right into his mouth.

“Oh no,” whispered Pockets.

Bubbles turned pale and droopy. His fins stopped wiggling, and he sank slowly toward the bottom.

“Bubbles! Are you okay?”

A tiny, weak voice drifted up from the water. “My tummy hurts…”

Pockets hurried over to the dock. “Excuse me! Your words are falling into the pond, and my friend Bubbles eats them. The mean ones are making him sick!”

Mia and Leo stopped arguing. They knelt down, peered into the water, and saw poor Bubbles lying still on the sand.

“We didn’t know our words went anywhere,” said Mia quietly.

“We thought words just… disappeared,” said Leo.

Pockets shook his head. “Words never really disappear. They stay with whoever hears them.”

Mia and Leo looked at each other. Then Mia took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry I called you clumsy, Leo. It was an accident, and you’re actually really good at flying kites.”

Leo smiled. “And I’m sorry I said nobody wants to play with you. I always want to play with you. You’re my best friend.”

This time, their words floated into the pond glowing gold and pink, like little stars. They drifted down, down, down to where Bubbles lay, and one by one, he ate them all.

Slowly, his scales began to shine again. His fins fluttered. His tail swished! He zoomed up to the surface in a happy loop.

“Thank you!” his voice sang out. “Those were the most delicious words I’ve ever eaten!”

Pockets clapped. Mia and Leo cheered. And from that day on, they always chose his words carefully, because he knew that kind words help others grow strong and shine, while unkind words can leave a hurt that lingers.
